LMCC's history is closely tied to the events of 9/11. During its first three decades, LMCC grew with Downtown, cultivating art and culture throughout the neighborhood and specifically around the World Trade Center. By the end of the 1990s, LMCC had moved its offices into the World Trade Center and transformed it into a cultural anchor with residencies in the upper floors of the North Tower, free performances in the WTC Plaza, and exhibition spaces showcasing artists of all disciplines. LMCC was among the many who lost everything in the collapse of the towers, including the life of one of its resident artists, Michael Richards.
