The NY Times reports that two Canadian Government departments were hit hard in an attack that effectively rendered their computers networks offline for two months. The networks that were attacked were in charge of managing bureaucracy and government operations--including the Department of Finance that sets budget and fiscal policy. The attackers, states NYT, may be China--but no official accusation has been made--although the trace did lead to internet access in China.
State employees, following the attack, often times had to run to their homes to use the internet or go to nearby cafes to connect. During that time, forensic investigators rummaged through the potentially infected machines--removing software and conducting a criminal investigation. The Canadian Government has an official policy of not commented on computer related issues.
