Twitter and Billboard to launch a charts service.
Twitter and Billboard recently announced that they will be partnering up to create real-time charts which will provide new insight into how the population perceives music. The charts will track tweets which relate to music conversations on Twitter. The two companies have also signed a Twitter Amplify partnership, which will allow the charts to be dispersed beyond Billboard. This will include custom in-Tweet charts and videos within Twitter that show top and trending songs, among other items.
Billboard has long been considered one of the premier standards for gauging the popularity of music. It has in part retained its spot via progressive partnerships with online media companies such as YouTube and Spotify. Adding these charts to its information database will add more texture to the conversation around music. According to Twitter, the charts will allow artists to gain greater exposure to fans or potential fans in real time.
This new platform will be well positioned to create new standards for how music emerges and is tracked. The charts will hopefully facilitate a greater level of efficiency between users' aural requirements and the mediums which attempt to match them. The Billboard partnership is not Twitter's only musical endeavor in recent history. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Twitter was also in discussions with Beats Music and Soundcloud in aim of forging partnerships with the firms.
