Setting Adjustments with iOS 7

Now that iOS 7 has been released there are several settings "tweaks" we suggest you make to ensure your privacy is in place and your battery has maximum efficiency. Start by adjusting privacy settings on your iPhone or iPad.

ios-7-logoApple hides its System Services settings at the bottom of the Privacy > Location Services panel. Below the applications list on the bottom of the list is the System Services setting and the explanation of what the purple arrow icons means. When they appear in the top right of your menu bar, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services to see which apps are using your location data.

Then touch System Services to reveal the most important privacy settings on your iPhone or iPad. Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Diagnostics & Usage. The Diagnostics & Usage setting monitors everything you do on your iPhone and "anonymously" sends it to Apple for "improving iOS." If that option is on you're giving Apple permission to monitor and record everything you do on your device although anonymously.

Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Frequent Locations. Frequent Locations is equally troublesome too. This captures about your "frequent locations".

Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Location-Based iAds. iAds allows your location information to be used to allow a brand – and their "partners and licensees" – to "collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device." Turn this off and be happy with "less relevant" ads.

Lastly, turn on Settings > Safari > Do Not Track. Apple's  supports the Do Not Track standard. Event though it is dated technology turn it on  as the some servers still utilize it.

Some users are finding that updating to iOS 7 seems to have reduced the battery life. Battery issues are easier to identify in iOS 7 because they generally relate to new features bin iOS 7. Here are some adjustments that should help.

  • Turn off Background Application Updates - iOS 7 allows apps to update while in the background. That means some apps will no longer pause themselves when they aren’t in the foreground.Turning off this feature means apps in the background are halted until in the foreground again.
  • Turn Off Auto Application Updates - This causes activity on your device when it’s not in use, and that means it will drain your battery.
  • Quit Background Applications - Quitting apps like Maps and GPS can help to improve battery life, though this is less important if you have Background App Refresh turned OFF. Focus on closing out mapping, directions, fitness trackers and things that are designed to follow you or follow movements.
  • Turn Off Motion and Parallax - The motion features of iOS 7 use system resources to function. Turn it off. These motion features have much less of an impact with the iPhone 5S that has a separate M7 motion chip. With other iPhones motion sensing is done by the primary CPU, thus potentially impacting battery life.
  • Don’t Use Dynamic Wallpaper - Moving wallpapers certainly look cool but it uses resources. Disabling the moving wallpapers can help with battery life.
  • Disable Location Services - Location Services have always been battery hogs, Disable as many location services as you can live without
  • Turn Off Frequent Locations - Frequent Locations is what allows the Notification Center to provide estimates of how long things take. It does this by retrieving your location and it can impact battery life.
  • Turn Down Brightness - Keeping your screen bright uses a lot of power. This is one of the most effective tricks at prolonging battery life.

Other tricks include disabling Bluetooth, don’t allow Push, use Fetch for Mail instead of Push, and reset to factory defaults and restore from backup.
