The company made their name with mobile utility iOS apps that help users manage and extend their data plans, particularly the very popular Onavo Extend. They have also launched Insights, which helps brands get actionable metrics on how users are interacting with their applications. . Beyond that, it seems that the acquisition will help Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s initiative, Internet.org, with both talent and technology to improve access to the Internet. In a post on the company's blog, the founders discuss the future of the partnership:
We’re excited to join their team, and hope to play a critical role in reaching one of Internet.org’s most significant goals – using data more efficiently, so that more people around the world can connect and share. When the transaction closes, we plan to continue running the Onavo mobile utility apps as a standalone brand...Onavo’s Tel-Aviv office will remain open for business and will become Facebook’s new Israeli office.
We’ll be watching how this plays out, with both the applications that help users manage their data more efficiently (especially considering how much data FB apps use) and the effort to broaden the Internet’s reach since the "internet isn’t accessible for two thirds of the world."
