Amazon sells 1m daily deal gift certificates in 17 hours online

Amazon sold 1 million daily deal $10 gift cards for $5 in 17 hours. As a result, the new service AmazonLocal offers website probably just raked in a huge number of new members in a short burst.

This stunning success could pose a threat to LivingSocial, Amazon's strategic partner which sold 1.4 million Amazon gift cards last year as a whole. Amazon currently owns a good portion of LivingSocial after investing $175m in the daily deal website. It should be noted that  Living Social provides the majority of the daily deals for AmazonLocal.
