The number of users of social networking websites such as Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter has doubled since 2007. In the US alone, 55.6 million people use social networking websites.

  • Social networking has become more popular than instant messaging for adults.
  • Other online activities such as watching video, online shopping, and email however are still more popular than social networks.
  • Within the world of social networking by comparison, Twitter has become more popular than Linkedin.

Twitter:
Aside from posting short posts, about 20% of Twitter users have their own blog. Many of these users can help marketing brands, goods, services or events. More than half of social network users have associated their profiles with a brand, company or product in some way. Even though there has been much discussion recently about negative focused discussions of brands or products, according to Anderson Analytics most social network users are more likely to speak positively about products or brands online.
