Apple launched a store dedicated to apps, but it not geared for it's iPhone or iPad, it is bringing that same app store functionality to laptops and desktops. The store launched with 1,604 Apps (as counted by Distimo), which run the gamut from games to productivity. (The Distimo report also shows that games dominate the store.) Similar to the mobile app store, Apple offers a 70% / 30% split with app developers, which encourages innovation.
