Can NYC become the next big tech hub?

Silicon Alley is just not enough. NYC wants more.

The city has posted a tech competition for building a tech campus. The goal was to solicit plans and pick one in order to strengthen the city's tech allure. The problem was that the city got too many great proposals, and now they may have to decide how to entertain more than one of them. It's a happy problem.

The original idea was to build a tech campus in either the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Governors Island or Roosevelt Island. The city was dually impressed with Cornell's proposal and Stanford University's proposal. It didn't end there. With the entrance of NYU, Carnegie Mellon, and Columbia University, the contest grew into a treasure trove of opportunity for the city. Many of the schools have alliances to other institution both national and international, which fuels the excitement around their individual plans.

The seemingly best bet is to expand the original scope of the contest. Perhaps the city will pay more than originally expected--$100 million to support the development of the campus. Multiple esteemed campuses would put New York City's plan of being the next tech hub into hyperdrive.
